First of all, I’m gonna say something outside the story. Apparently, I need new pair of glasses, I think. My vision is kinda unstable and I get dizzy quite easily. So, in short, I can’t gaze at active screen for a long time so I think my article would be shorter than usual due to this issue. The doctor will be available next week, so I think next week my eyes would in much better shape.
OK, moving on..
Couple weeks ago, as usual, my friends and I were confused in choosing place to eat. It was rainy day so I think warm or hot soup might do the best trick. I’m not really a soup guy, but I didn’t regret that decision we made that time. Actually, my friend had this idea since I didn’t know much about this region. It’s around Selokan Mataram in Yogyakarta, northern part of the Yogyakarta City. I believe it’s on northern side of Jalan Tantular (based on Google Map, since this restaurant hasn’t popped out there) which is separated by Selokan Mataram. Look on east side of the street since the banner is quite ‘invisible’ at a glance. The place is called Mie Ayam Kuah Kaldu in Bahasa Indonesia, or can be literally translated into Broth Noodle in English, but I’ll stick to Bahasa Indonesia version.
What Is It?
The restaurant is really simple and looks so homey. It’s a small open space area painted mostly with red and white (like our national flag 😀 ). However, this place only serve one kind of food, mie ayam. As a pre-story, this mie ayam kuah kaldu is basically mie ayam (chicken noodle) but with specially made broth. Usually the broth for mie ayam is clear and a slightly salty but not with this mie ayam kuah kaldu. Here, the broth is more to darker color like it’s mixed with various spice and was sweet. Not overly sweet, but definitely unlike common mie ayam. This broth is basically made by boiling chicken which has been marinated with sweet soy sauce before, hence making it darker in color and sweet in flavor.
Promo Offer (will be explained later)
See, that’s the dark broth which was blazing hot when it came to your table for the first time.
What makes your order might be different than your friends here is the toppings. You’ll be provided with several different toppings to choose, like sausages, meatballs, quail eggs, chicken feet, caplo (poached egg), and one more topping I forget. You can choose them individually or combine each other to your own preference. The main course size had 2 option. Medium (IDR 8k) and jumbo (IDR 10k). Every bowls came with chinese cabbage and cucumber slices. I believe this style of mie ayam isn’t originally from Jogja, especially with that sweet style broth.
Now, talking about promo offer, I don’t know when will they put this promo off menu, but until a few days ago I came back there, it’s still on. So, here in mie ayam kuah kaldu restaurant, you can order a special offer for IDR 20k. This includes jumbo+ size bowl of noodle with ‘all’ toppings (they said in menu). However, what makes this an interesting option is, you can get more portion of noodle for free when you’ve finished one. This must be a great deal for massive eater. However, the downside is, you don’t get all of the 6 toppings available, but only 4. I knew that after I asked the waiter about this issue. I hope they can revise their on-menu advertisement saying that customers will get ‘all’ toppings. Nonetheless, the taste was great, noodle’s still chewy (because some restaurant have saggy noodle for mie ayam), broth was amazing, and portion was outstanding.
This restaurant is a new thing for me and I’m happy with the food. Price are still reasonable for everything comes to my table. It’s near some universities, so no doubt that the price is student-friendly. Anyway, give me comments or opinions at the comment section below if you have something to say, and stay tuned for my next stories.
CHEERS AND HAVE A GREAT DAY!!
