Halfpipe Hero : Minimalist Yet Immersive

Just 2 days ago I found a cool game called Halfpipe Hero – Skateboarding by Bit Free Games. I must admit this is actually one simple and short game compared to most casual games I’ve tried. Judging from the title, the theme of this game is of course sport especially skateboarding. It’s free to download but there is an in-game purchase for further features including more characters and stadium.

How Halfpipe Hero Actually Looks

The graphic style of Halfpipe Hero is more like an old school Nintendo games, retro and pixelated. Their graphic artists really nailed the scenery with awesome and eye-popping results despite the minimalist style.

As for the skaters design, they used pretty much the same base, just playing more in choosing colors. You’ll have several types of skaters but come in various color sets.

Halfpipe Hero’s Selling Points

Its main selling / focal point is actually in gameplay or game mechanics. You only have one action to do which is going back and forth in a halfpipe and do tricks. You can unlock new places by finishing 3 challenges for each place and buy new skaters as well for $1K in-game coins. The cool part is seeing your skater do tricks and combos. It’s so freakin’ cool though since I can’t do that in real life, lol.

All you have to do is give a tap at exact and perfect timing to make tricks. You need to time your landing position as well so your skater don’t bail and break the combo streak. I just can’t stop playing over and over again just to finish its challenges. Another cool part is making combo with any tricks possible and that requires focus and proper calculation though. You need to time exactly when to grind, flip (how many flips you need), slide, and invert.

Overall I just love this game but I think Halfpipe Hero is pretty short. I don’t know about the paid features but right now I don’t think of going that far. It would be better for the developer to add story, make the game longer, or give more challenges. I’m sure those features will bring more customers since it has great potential to be way better.

OK, it’s time to call it a day and I’m going to end my review here. Visit my blog daily for routine updates on gaming and foodie reviews, give me some words if you have recommendations or ideas, and see you next time.
